When Prayer Is Not Enough
I am not religious by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe I’m slightly “spiritual” in that I believe sending good thoughts out into the universe may bring on some good karma.
When I read about the financial plight of one of our own, the need for a GOFUNDME( https://www.gofundme.com/2rxnbvtw) page to retain an attorney for issues which sound like they were totally beyond her son’s control, I prayed to the universe “If anyone out there is listening, please help Vicky and her son”.
I know prayer isn’t enough.
Most of us in “registry-hell” are financially tapped. We’ve paid for the best attorneys we could afford for our loved ones, spent years putting money into commissary accounts for phone cards, extra nourishment, and warmer clothes. We’ve maxed out credit cards on gas, meals and lodging to visit prisons that were more than the BOP’s advertised ” 500 mile radius from the inmate’s home”. Many of us are retired,on fixed incomes and helping our adult children.
For a son to serve his prison time, finally come home, be able to find love and a job and then to have the carpet pulled out from under him for no reason, I can only imagine how devastating that is to all involved. Many of us, I suppose, have been in their shoes already, many of us are waiting, holding our breath, for the other shoe to drop. As long as we are labeled “Registrants” we know there will always be something up ahead blocking our paths, we may not be able to see it at the moment, but we are certain it’s there, waiting, just waiting to trip us up.
Unfortunate as it may be, until laws change, this is our new reality, a new road for us to learn to navigate without the assistance of GPS.
In a world long ago, WE DID navigate without benefit of GPS, WE CAN do it again.
